The program was founded in 2012 by SarahRose Black with the immense support and guidance of psychiatrist Dr. Gary Rodin and the Department of Supportive Care (formerly Psychosocial Oncology and Palliative Care). It has since grown over the past 9 years to include research projects, education based in the community and in different departments of the University of Toronto, as well as multiple student placements each year through Wilfrid Laurier University’s graduate music therapy training program.
A part of the program includes: Stethoscopes for heartbeat recordings. They record the beat of patients' hearts on their dying days to be used in a song composed for their families and loved ones.
